Domain Renewal Group Scam

Today I was lucky enough to receive a letter from a “company” going by the name of Domain Renewal Group. The letter is a reminder that my domain name registration is going to expire in the next few months. Isn’t that nice of them? Unfortunately the letter is written very much like an invoice with the purpose of convincing me to transfer my domain that is set to expire to them for a rip off price. Your domain registrar is never going to contact you via mail and likely have an automated email system in place to remind you of any domains that are set to expire.

If you happen to receive a letter from this company we recommend that you bin it straight away. If you have already replied to them with your payment details we recommend contacting your bank to have your card canceled or request a chargeback. The good news is that your domain name is still safe until you unlock your domain and provide them with your EPP code.

I have taken the time out to take a picture of this letter so readers of this post can better avoid this scam in the future. I apologies for the bad quality image as it was taken with my iPhone.

I too received a letter and was shocked at the ‘renewal’ price. I googled their name plus scam and found this post plus a few others. I am only an hour outside London so think I will tap on their door..

    Nothing like a hand delivery.

      Hello Dazzer,

I would love to hear the results of that :) I’ve been thinking of re-sending every letter I receive from them as it will cost them money.

Actually you could use the enclosed envelope to send back their letter, just don’t put a stamp on it. They would either have to pay the postage or leave it. They will not know its their letter until they open it after paying the postage ! They may think its a punter who has enclosed a cheque without putting a stamp on it.
I will do this today and any subsequent ones. Eventually they will have to take me off their mailing list.
